Steps to get your learner's permit in Iowa:

  • When you are 14, you will be allowed to apply for an instruction permit. This permit allows you to practice driving behind the wheel with a parent or legal guardian. You will have to be sure the driver supervising you is older than 21 and a family member. If you cannot find a family memeber to be your supervised driver a non family member that supervises your driving will have to be 25 or older.
  • At 16 you will be eligible to apply for your intermediate license which will allow you to drive under certain regulations. You will be able to drive alone depending on the hour of the day, and only if you have successfully completed the driver's education courses that are mandatory.
  • At 17, you can finally obtain a regular Iowa driver's license, but only if you have a clean driving record for at least 12 months. You can contact the Iowa DMV office if you have had any accidents or gotten any tickets to go to a remedial driver improvement interview, and then you can be eligible to receive your Iowa driver's license.

Remember to bring with you:

  • Proof of your identity.
  • Proof of your Social Security number.
  • Parent's Written Consent to Issue Privilege to Drive or Affidavit to Obtain Duplicate License (Form #430018), if your parent or guardian is not accompanying you to the testing station.

You will need to complete a vision screening and a written knowledge test that measures your understanding of safe driving practices before you can apply.

The learner's permit fee is $6. Your permit will be valid for four years and may be renewed if necessary.
