Massachusetts ID Cards

Massachusetts approaches getting an ID card in a different way than most states. They actually have two types of ID cards: one for those under 21 and another card, known as a ?liquor ID card? for those individuals that are 21 years of age or older. To get a Massachusetts ID card, decide which group you fall into and use the following requirements accordingly:

Requirements for those under 21

  • Be at least 14 years of age
  • Show proof of residency
  • You are not eligible for a Massachusetts ID card if you hold a driver's license in any other state
  • Show a valid passport or Social Security card
  • Parental consent is required if you are under the age of 18
  • License fee is $25 for five years

Requirements for those 21 or over

  • You may not already hold a Massachusetts driving license
  • Must be at least 21 or older
  • Show a valid passport or Social Security card
  • License fee is $25 for five years

Every five years, your Massachusetts ID card will expire. Most people will need to visit their local RMV branch in order to obtain a new one, but some people will be eligible to renew online.
