Change Address on License

If you have recently changed your residential address, be sure to contact all of the parties that you communicate with on a regular basis in order to make sure that they continue sending you correspondences by mail. One of the most important parties you need to keep in mind is the Motor Vehicle Division of Montana. This division is responsible for the issuance of MT drivers licenses and other important driving documents. Therefore, in order to make sure that you receive all warning and notices of renewal, you will need to update your personal information on the MVD's records. Furthermore, the Motor Vehicle Division requires that you make this official address change within 10 days of your move to ensure that you do not miss out on any important correspondences.

Additionally, it is also important to note that you will have to notify parties such as the United States Postal Service, your bank, your credit card company, your magazine subscriptions, and more.

How to Change Address on Drivers Licenses in Person

If you would like to submit an address change request to the MVD and receive a drivers license replacement that features your updated address, you can complete this process at any full-service driver station. All you need to do is follow the steps below:

  1. Submit a filled-out a Change of Driver License Address form and submit it to an MVD examiner.
  2. Pay the $10 Montana duplicate drivers license fee.

For more information on exam stations, such as hours and schedules, visit the Driver Exam Stations page.

Note: If you are out-of-state when you need a duplicate drivers license, you can apply by mail by sending payment for the $10 drivers license replacement fee, two photocopies of acceptable ID documents and a completed Replacement Driver License by Mail form by mail to:

Montana Department of Justice
Motor Vehicle Division
PO Box 201430
Helena, MT 59620-1430

Keep in mind you will also have to fill out the Change of Driver License Address form to update your address records.

How to Change Address on Drivers Licenses by Mail

The only other option you have for performing a motor vehicle change of address in Montana is to apply to update your Motor Vehicle Division record by mail. To do so, you will have to complete a Change of Driver License Address form and mail it to the following address:

Motor Vehicle Division
Records Section
P.O. Box 201430
Helena, MT 59620-1430

Take note that the by-mail application method will not result in the issuance of a drivers license replacement. This application procedure is only used to update your electronic record with the Motor Vehicle Division of Montana. In order to obtain a duplicate drivers license that reflects your address change request in MT, you must apply in person using the method that was described above. In any case, because you will not be receiving an updated driver license with this method, this address changing process is free of charge.
