Change Address On License
Drivers that have recently moved to another city or town within Michigan are required to update this information on their drivers licenses. Note that the MI Secretary of State is in charge of ensuring all of your driving license records and vehicle documents are accurate and up-to-date.
How to Change Address on Drivers Licenses in Person
The process of making an address change request effective with the DMV will require you to make an in-person visit. In the state of Michigan, not only are the steps for changing your address very simple and straightforward, but the Secretary of State has also made this service free to all residents of the state of Michigan.
Prior to making your way to a local SOS office to change address on drivers license, download the Michigan Change of Address/Voter Registration (Form ED-109W). Fill out the form in its entirety, then visit a nearby branch with additional documentation, such as:
- Proof of identity
- Proof of your new address
- Payment for any applicable fees
Acceptable proofs of residency include a utility bill, a financial statement from your bank, a lease agreement, a W2 form, a mortgage agreement, car registration document, military orders, a Voter Registration Card with your new address, a medical statement or official government correspondence.
How to Change Address on Drivers Licenses by Mail
If you prefer to update your address information by mail, you can so by filling out the same form - the Michigan Change of Address/Voter Registration (Form ED-109W). This address changing application will ask you to enter the below information:
- Your MI driving license number
- Your new residential address
- Your mailing address (if different from your mailing address)
- Your date of birth
- Your daytime phone number
- Your full name
- Your signature
You may also use the MI Change of Address form to register to vote. If you are interested in signing up, so that you may vote come the next election, you can do so by inputting your personal information in the Register to Vote Section. Bear in mind that you must use the same residential address for voter registration as you do for driving licensing purposes.

In order to verify your official address change, the Michigan Secretary of State will send a letter to your old address. If you do not want residents at your old address to know about your new location, complete this request at your nearest SOS office instead.
Note: After your change of address request has been processed, an address label will be mailed out to the location you have on file. You must place this label on the back of your drivers license and carry it with you at all times. Failure to do so may result in fines.
